Never Too Late
It gave me the perfect excuse to get many of the session musicians that I've been using since the seventies to come in and play on the record, which was an absolute joy. Not to mention countless hours tinkering with the songs, which I love to do.
The album came out on 1 February 2022, and it means something a bit different to me than anything I've made before — these weren't songs written to order for someone else's project, they were ideas I'd been carrying around for years, and finally, with Dan alongside me, I got to finish them.
After more than forty years writing music for other people's films, TV shows and animations, Never Too Late is the first time in a long while that the songs are entirely my own. It came together almost by accident. During the 2021 lockdown, my son Dan — a composer and producer himself — suggested we dig out some old songs I'd started over the years but never got round to finishing, and actually see them through and with everything else on hold, the timing couldn't have been better.
